Kansas City is an underrated gem for family-friendly summer vacations with its mix of cultural attractions, sports, and hands-on experiences.
Our family loves all the kid-friendly attractions here. We are huge fans of Science City and always make sure to stop by IKEA.
Our boys also love the College Basketball Experience—it’s such a fun, interactive way for them to burn energy!

- Money Museum – A great (and free!) place to learn about money and see real gold bars.

2. Chicago, Illinois
Summertime in Chicago is unbeatable! With stunning lakefront views, world-class museums, and tons of family-friendly attractions, it’s one of the best places to visit with kids in summer.
Our family loves visiting Chicago, and one of our favorite ways to get downtown is by taking the train from the suburbs—it’s convenient, avoids parking hassles, and adds to the adventure!

6. St. Louis, Missouri
A Midwest city full of history, sports, and hands-on fun for kids—and one of our family’s favorite getaways!
We love staying at the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch, just a 2-minute walk from the Gateway Arch itself.
It’s the perfect spot for soaking in views of the Arch throughout the day.
Our boys bring their scooters and love riding the smooth paths that surround it, and we’ve even played ball beneath the Arch’s towering shadow.
And if there’s one spot our kids still talk about, it’s the City Museum—truly one of the most unique and unforgettable museums we’ve ever visited!

7. Gatlinburg, Tennessee
We’ve been to Gatlinburg numerous times and absolutely LOVE it!
It’s one of our favorite family vacation spots because there’s just so much to do.
You can enjoy outdoor adventures, quirky museums, scenic views, and plenty of family fun.
We especially love visiting Anakeesta and The Island—they’re always a hit with our kids.

8. San Diego, California
San Diego is one of our favorite destinations thanks to its perfect mix of outdoor adventures, museums, and beaches galore.
It’s full of family-friendly and budget-friendly attractions that make it easy to enjoy without overspending.
We always stay at the Homewood Suites Liberty Station—we love this area! It’s close to top attractions and the airport, plus walkable to so many great restaurants right in Liberty Station.
Our favorite attraction is the USS Midway Museum, and we never skip a visit to the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park.
We also always make time to drive up to La Jolla to see the seals—it’s such a fun experience for kids!

9. Mackinac Island, Michigan
Mackinac Island holds a special place in our hearts—our boys still say it was one of their all-time favorite summer vacations!
We all loved the peaceful charm of the island, especially the fact that there are no vehicles.
Biking the full 8.2 miles around the island was such a memorable family adventure.
We also had so much fun popping into all the fudge shops downtown!
One of our favorite moments was playing a round of miniature golf at Mission Point Resort—a super special experience with beautiful views!

10. Branson, Missouri
Branson is one of those places that might surprise you with how much there is to do—especially for families.
We’ve been to Branson numerous times and it continues to be a favorite!
We’ve stayed in various vacation rentals as well as Marriott’s Willow Ridge Lodge.
One of our favorite things to do is spend a day at Silver Dollar City, but we also never skip the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail golf cart tour—it’s such a hit with both the kids and adults!
Between all of the miniature golf courses, quirky museums, and outdoor adventures, there is always so much fun to be had in Branson.

We absolutely love Maui—its beauty is truly unmatched.
It’s one of those places where the scenery takes your breath away, and there’s something for every kind of family adventure.
We enjoy splitting our time between Ka’anapali and Wailea, two areas that offer totally different vibes but are equally amazing for families.
From beach days and snorkeling adventures to exploring Maui’s top sights, it’s the kind of place that’s just as relaxing as it is exciting for kids and parents alike!

13. Vail, Colorado
We absolutely love Vail—it’s our favorite place to spend time in the summer!
Vail is the perfect mix of laid-back relaxation and outdoor adventure.
Our family enjoys exploring all of Vail’s parks, riding the Eagle Bahn Gondola, and taking part in the fun at Epic Discovery at Adventure Ridge atop Vail Mountain.
Strolling through Vail Village and Lionshead Village is one of our favorite ways to start the day with a coffee or end it with an ice cream.
And the kids especially love renting bikes and cruising along Gore Creek!

14. Colorado Springs, Colorado
Colorado Springs is another fabulous family-friendly destination with so much to offer!
From feeding giraffes at the amazing Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to exploring the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center, there are so many unique attractions to experience.
One of our favorite places to visit is the breathtaking Garden of the Gods—it’s truly a must-see!
For a memorable activity, hop aboard the Cog Railway to the summit of Pikes Peak and take in the incredible views.
And if your family is up for even more adventure, drive just an hour south of Colorado Springs to walk across the Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge—America’s highest suspension bridge—and test your bravery on the other thrilling attractions there too!

We’ve made so many great memories here with our kids.
We love spending time at the Mall of America—there’s something for everyone! Our kids can’t get enough of Nickelodeon Universe and all the fun rides, and our youngest is obsessed with the Paw Patrol play area.
We’re also huge fans of the Children’s Museum in St. Paul, which is always a hit.
When we’re ready to slow things down a bit, we enjoy walking and relaxing around the scenic Chain of Lakes. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, entertainment, and outdoor fun for families!
