Where to Stay in the Black Hills with Kids: The Best Towns for Families

One of the questions I see most often when planning a Black Hills vacation is, “Where should we stay?”
After visiting the Black Hills multiple times and staying in different areas, I’ve learned there really isn’t one perfect answer.
Unlike destinations where you can park your car and walk everywhere, the Black Hills are spread out.
Whether you’re visiting Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, or Spearfish Canyon, you’ll likely spend a fair amount of time driving no matter where you stay.
Instead of trying to find the “best” town, I recommend choosing the area that best fits your family’s priorities.
The Black Hills are much larger than many first-time visitors realize, and where you stay can shape the experience you have.
Here’s what I’ve learned from our trips.
How to Choose Where to Stay in the Black Hills
Before you start looking at hotels or vacation rentals, I recommend thinking through a few things first.
1. Decide which attractions are your highest priorities.
The Black Hills cover a large area, so there isn’t one location that’s close to everything.
If Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park are at the top of your list, you may choose a different home base than someone planning to spend more time around Rapid City or Spearfish.
I like pulling up Google Maps before booking and checking drive times to the attractions we know we don’t want to miss.
2. Decide what kind of vacation you want.
Do you picture ending your day surrounded by pine trees and wildlife?
Or do you prefer having lots of restaurants and conveniences nearby after a full day of exploring?
Neither choice is wrong. They simply create different vacation experiences.
3. Don’t rely on the town name alone.
This is one of the biggest planning tips I can give.
Just because a hotel or vacation rental has a Hill City, Keystone, or Rapid City address doesn’t necessarily mean it’s close to downtown or nearby restaurants.
For example, one of our favorite vacation rentals had a Hill City address, but it was about a six-minute drive from downtown Hill City.
That ended up being perfect for us because we felt surrounded by nature while still being close enough to drive into town for dinner, ice cream, or shopping.
Before booking, I always recommend typing the property’s exact address into Google Maps and checking the drive time to:
- the attractions you plan to visit most
- restaurants you’ll likely eat at
- grocery stores if you plan to cook during your stay
A few minutes of planning can make a huge difference.
4. Read recent reviews carefully.
Reviews often tell you things the listing won’t.
I always pay close attention to comments about cleanliness, noise, comfortable beds, parking, location, and whether the photos accurately represent the property. Those details can make a big difference, especially on a family vacation.
Staying in the Hill City Area
If you’re hoping for a quieter stay that feels like you’re truly in the Black Hills, I think the Hill City area is an excellent choice.
One of our favorite stays was just outside downtown Hill City.
Although we weren’t within walking distance of downtown, it only took us about six minutes to drive into town for restaurants, ice cream, and gift shops.
Back at our vacation rental, we felt completely surrounded by the Black Hills. We regularly saw deer in the evenings, enjoyed the peaceful setting, and loved feeling immersed in nature after a day of sightseeing.
For families looking for cabins, lodges, or vacation rentals, the Hill City area offers a wonderful balance of convenience and that classic Black Hills experience.
Best for families who:
- Want a quieter setting
- Prefer cabins, lodges, or vacation rentals
- Don’t mind a short drive into town
- Want a central location for exploring much of the Black Hills
Where We Stayed
We loved staying in a vacation rental near Hill City. Having extra space for our family, a peaceful setting surrounded by pine trees, and being just a short drive from downtown made it a wonderful home base for exploring the Black Hills.
If having extra space and a quieter setting sounds like a good fit for your family, take a look at the vacation rentals available in the Hill City area.
Staying in Rapid City
Rapid City offers a different experience than staying in one of the smaller Black Hills towns.
During our most recent trip, we stayed in downtown Rapid City and were glad we experienced that side of the Black Hills, too.
On our last morning there, we walked through downtown, explored the City of Presidents statues, and let the kids run around Main Street Square.
Even with just that short visit, I left thinking our family would love staying downtown again so we could walk to dinner, grab ice cream, and spend more time enjoying the area in the evenings.
If you choose to stay in Rapid City, keep in mind that many hotels are spread throughout the city rather than concentrated downtown.
That’s another reason I recommend checking the exact address before booking instead of assuming every Rapid City hotel offers the same experience.
Rapid City is a great choice for families who enjoy having plenty of hotel options, restaurants, and everyday conveniences after a day of exploring the Black Hills.
Best for families who:
- Want a wide variety of hotels
- Like having plenty of restaurant choices
- Plan to explore downtown Rapid City
- Appreciate easy access to grocery stores and other conveniences
Where We Stayed
During our most recent trip, we stayed at Hyatt Place Downtown Rapid City and would happily stay there again.
It was a great fit for our family of six thanks to the spacious room, complimentary breakfast, and parking garage underneath the hotel. We also loved being just a short walk from Main Street Square, the City of Presidents statues, restaurants, and ice cream.
If you’re looking for a convenient downtown hotel with plenty of space for families, I definitely recommend taking a look.

Staying in Keystone
Keystone is one of the most popular places to stay because it’s just minutes from Mount Rushmore.
The town has a fun, tourist-friendly atmosphere with restaurants, shops, attractions, and family activities all close together.
If visiting Mount Rushmore is your top priority, staying in or near Keystone can reduce some of the driving to and from the monument.
One thing to keep in mind is that a Keystone address doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be within walking distance of downtown.
Before booking, check the property’s exact location on Google Maps to see how far it is from the restaurants, attractions, and activities you plan to enjoy.
Depending on where your hotel or vacation rental is located, you may still need to drive into town.
Like the rest of the Black Hills, you’ll also be driving to many of the area’s other attractions throughout your trip.
Best for families who:
- Want to be closest to Mount Rushmore
- Enjoy a lively tourist town
- Hope to spend time exploring Keystone
- Don’t mind driving to many of the Black Hills’ other attractions
Compare hotels in Keystone if being close to Mount Rushmore is a priority for your family.
Staying in Custer
If exploring Custer State Park is one of your top priorities, Custer is another area worth considering.
The town has a relaxed, small-town feel and can be a great home base for families planning to spend a significant amount of time in the southern Black Hills.
One thing to keep in mind is that staying in Custer doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be just minutes from Custer State Park.
The park is much larger than many first-time visitors expect, and the town itself sits outside the park.
Before booking, I recommend mapping your hotel or vacation rental to the specific attractions you plan to visit most, whether that’s the Wildlife Loop, Sylvan Lake, Needles Highway, or another destination.
A Custer address may still mean a 30-minute or longer drive to some of those locations.
While I’ve driven through Custer, I haven’t personally stayed there overnight. If you’re considering this area, I’d compare exact locations, drive times, and recent reviews to find the best fit for your family.
Best for families who:
- Plan to spend significant time in Custer State Park
- Prefer a quieter, small-town atmosphere
- Don’t mind checking drive times to the attractions they plan to visit most
Browse hotels and cabins in the Custer area if you plan to spend most of your time exploring Custer State Park.
Staying in Deadwood
Deadwood has a completely different feel than the rest of the Black Hills.
When we visited, we enjoyed walking through the historic downtown and experiencing its unique Wild West character. I
f you enjoy history, unique architecture, and learning about the area’s past, Deadwood can be a fun place to visit or stay.
One thing I would consider if you’re traveling with young kids is the atmosphere.
Downtown Deadwood is known for its casinos, bars, and nightlife, so it can feel livelier than some of the other Black Hills towns, especially in the evenings.
I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my kids there, but it’s something I would want to know ahead of time if I were deciding where to stay.
The other tradeoff is location.
Because Deadwood is in the northern Black Hills, you’ll spend more time driving to attractions like Mount Rushmore, Keystone, and Custer State Park.
While those destinations are still easy enough to visit as day trips, it’s worth considering how much driving you want to do each day before choosing Deadwood as your home base.
Best for families who:
- Enjoy history and historic downtowns
- Want to experience Deadwood’s unique character
- Don’t mind a livelier atmosphere
- Are comfortable with longer drives to many of the Black Hills’ most popular attractions

Staying in Spearfish
Spearfish is another town that some families choose as their home base, especially if they plan to explore Spearfish Canyon or spend time in the northern Black Hills.
The city offers a variety of hotels, restaurants, and other conveniences while providing easy access to outdoor recreation.
The biggest thing to consider is location.
Spearfish is farther from many of the Black Hills’ most popular attractions, including Mount Rushmore, Keystone, and Custer State Park. While those destinations are certainly possible as day trips, you’ll spend more time driving than if you stay in a more central location.
I haven’t personally stayed in Spearfish, but if I were considering it, I’d map my lodging to the attractions I planned to visit most before booking.
If your itinerary includes several days exploring Spearfish Canyon or the northern Black Hills, it could be a great fit.
If your focus is Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Keystone, you may prefer staying closer to these destinations.
Best for families who:

- Want a city with plenty of lodging and dining options
- Don’t mind longer drives to the southern Black Hills attractions

Is Rapid City or Hill City better for families?

Our family has enjoyed staying in both for different reasons.
Is Keystone a good place to stay?
Keystone is a great option if visiting Mount Rushmore is one of your top priorities.
It has a fun tourist-town atmosphere with restaurants, shops, and attractions.
Just remember that a Keystone address doesn’t always mean you’ll be within walking distance of downtown, so it’s worth checking the exact location of your hotel or vacation rental before booking.
How many days do you need in the Black Hills?
I recommend spending at least three to five days in the Black Hills if it’s your first visit.
That gives you enough time to visit major attractions like Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Storybook Island, and Wall Drug without feeling rushed.
If you enjoy hiking or want to explore at a slower pace, you could easily spend a week in the area.
Is it better to stay in one place or move hotels?
For most families, I recommend staying in one place. Unpacking once makes the trip feel much more relaxing, and most attractions are within a reasonable drive of one another.
Choosing a central home base can help reduce the amount of packing and unpacking during your vacation.
Can you stay inside Custer State Park?
Yes. There are several lodges and cabins located within Custer State Park, making it easy to spend more time exploring the park.
Staying inside the park can be a great option if Custer State Park is the main focus of your trip, but accommodations often book well in advance, especially during the summer months.
Is Deadwood a good place to stay with kids?
Deadwood can be a fun place to visit with kids, especially if your family enjoys history and exploring historic downtowns.
However, it’s also known for its casinos, bars, and lively nightlife, so the atmosphere is different from towns like Hill City or Keystone.
I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my kids there, but it’s something I’d want to know ahead of time when deciding where to stay.
Should I stay in Rapid City or inside the Black Hills?
If you want the greatest selection of hotels, restaurants, and stores, Rapid City is an excellent choice.
If you’d rather wake up surrounded by pine trees and be closer to many of the scenic attractions, staying in the Black Hills may be a better fit.
Neither option is right for everyone, so think about the type of vacation you want before booking.
What is the most central place to stay in the Black Hills?
If your goal is to minimize driving to the area’s most popular attractions, I think the Hill City area offers one of the most central locations.
It’s conveniently located between many of the destinations families visit most, including Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Keystone.
Just remember that many vacation rentals with a Hill City address are located outside of town, so it’s always worth checking the exact location before you book.
So, Where Should You Stay in the Black Hills?
If you’re visiting the Black Hills for the first time, I don’t think there’s one perfect town for every family.
The best place to stay depends on what you want to see, how much driving you’re comfortable with, and the type of vacation you’re hoping to have.
For our family, we’ve loved staying both in the Hill City area and downtown Rapid City for completely different reasons.
One gave us a peaceful setting surrounded by nature, while the other made it easy to enjoy restaurants, walk around downtown, and access everyday conveniences.
If there’s one piece of advice I’d give, it’s this:
Don’t choose your lodging based on the town name alone.
Instead, map the exact location of your hotel or vacation rental to the attractions you plan to visit most.
A few extra minutes of planning before you book can save you a lot of driving once your vacation begins.
No matter where you stay, you’re never far from incredible scenery, memorable adventures, and some of the best family experiences the Black Hills has to offer.
