As a mom of four boys, I’ve spent countless days exploring this amazing city, and I’m excited to share some of our favorite free things to do.
From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, there’s something here for everyone.

1. Iowa State Capitol
No visit to Des Moines is complete without a stop at the stunning Iowa State Capitol.
The Capitol grounds are perfect for exploring, with statues, memorials, and sweeping views of downtown. 🌇
My kids love rolling down the grassy hills, and the beauty of the architecture never gets old.
Inside, take a free guided tour to see the breathtaking dome, historic chambers, and the impressive law library. Tours last 75-90 minutes and offer a deeper look at Iowa’s rich history.
💡 Pro Tip: Guided tours are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
If you’re traveling with younger children, exploring the Capitol at your own pace might be the better option.
2. State Historical Museum
Just steps from the Capitol, the State Historical Museum offers an engaging way to dive into Iowa’s history.
The exhibits are family-friendly, and there’s even a children’s area for younger visitors.
My boys love the few hands-on activities offered, and we always leave with a newfound appreciation for what makes Iowa so special.

3. Des Moines Pedestrian Bridges
Des Moines is a wonderfully walkable and bike-friendly city, making it easy to explore its scenic pedestrian bridges. 🚲
On a gorgeous day, walking or biking over these bridges is the perfect free activity to soak in the views of the river and surrounding city sights.
We usually park along Robert D. Ray Drive near the Robert D. Ray Asian Garden, which makes a great starting point.
Our adventure begins with a stroll through the peaceful Asian Garden before crossing the Women of Achievement pedestrian bridge.
📌 Don’t forget to look down at the dam below—the kids love watching the rushing water!
Next, we take a break at Rotary Park and enjoy watching the skateboarders show off their tricks at Lauridsen Skate Park.
If we’re up for a longer outing, we’ll pass by the Women of Achievement Bridge (without crossing it this time) and follow the trail along the river to the Court Avenue Bridge.
From there, we cross another pedestrian bridge, the Principal Riverwalk, which loops us back toward our starting point.
This loop is about 2 miles, making it an easy and enjoyable way to explore downtown Des Moines and take in its beauty.
If we want to keep it short, we’ll simply head back across the Women of Achievement Bridge to where we parked.
4. Pappajohn Sculpture Park
The Pappajohn Sculpture Park is a must-see for families.
My kids love posing with the larger-than-life sculptures, and the open space makes it a perfect spot for the kids to burn off some energy.
Pro Tip: Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks or lunch to make the most of your visit. Prefer dining out? There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance where you can enjoy a lunch or early dinner! 🍴
5. Des Moines Art Center
The Des Moines Art Center is full of unique permanent and temporary exhibits inspire wonder and creativity.
While it’s best suited for older kids (as younger ones may be tempted to touch the art), there are often exhibits and special events throughout the year that kids of all ages will love.
Be sure to check the Art Center’s website for current offerings.
After exploring the galleries, don’t miss the gorgeous Rose Garden next door—a unique spot to get some fresh air and soak in the beauty of the outdoors.
✨ Bonus Stop: Greenwood Park, right next to the Art Center, is a great place for families to play and explore. The splash pad is always a hit with kids, and the hiking trails and wildlife-filled lagoon make it a perfect spot to round out your visit.
6. Iowa Gold Star Military Museum
Located in Johnston at the Camp Dodge Training Center, the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum offers a fascinating look into Iowa’s military history.
From detailed exhibits and artifacts to an Iowa State Patrol exhibit, this museum is packed with stories and history to discover.
The exhibits are thoughtfully organized by the different wars in both U.S. and Iowa history, making it a fantastic and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
Our kids especially love exploring the large military vehicles and the impressive large-scale dioramas!

7. Jester Park
Jester Park in Granger is a must-visit for outdoor-loving families.
Start your adventure at the Nature Center, where kids can explore interactive exhibits while you take in beautiful prairie views.
Next, visit the elk and bison herds—a highlight for animal lovers of all ages. 🦬
Just steps away, you’ll find the Natural Playscape, a favorite spot for our family. It’s perfect for imaginative play and hands-on outdoor exploration.
Pro Tip: Pack a change of clothes or towels—kids are bound to get wet in the Natural Playscape! 💦

8. Gray’s Lake
Gray’s Lake is a favorite spot for walking, biking, or enjoying a relaxing picnic. 🧺
The 2-mile loop trail around the lake is perfect for a family outing. Our boys love zipping around on their scooters or bikes while I get in a brisk walk and take in the serene views. 🚲
The illuminated pedestrian bridge is a must-see after sunset, offering stunning views of the Des Moines skyline and a magical nighttime atmosphere.
Gray’s Lake also features a sandy beach area for swimming and plenty of picnic spots to unwind and enjoy the day. ☀️
Exciting news: Plans are underway for a new playground and spray ground, making Gray’s Lake an even more enticing destination for families with kids!
9. Des Moines Water Works Park
Adjacent to Gray’s Lake, Water Works Park is another beautiful park offering trails, natural play areas, and the unique River Constellation Sculpture.
This expansive park is perfect for a day of outdoor fun and exploration.
The Reichardt Family Natural Play area is a favorite with our kids—it’s filled with logs to balance on, crawl under, climb over, and jump off, plus a small sandbox for imaginative play.
Water Works Park is also ideal biking, walking, or scootering (if your kids are like boys) or a picnic amidst nature.
Pro Tip: Thanks to the pedestrian underpass, it’s easy to explore both Water Works Park and Gray’s Lake in one visit, making for an unforgettable day of outdoor adventure!
10. Greenwood Park
Greenwood Park, located near the Des Moines Art Center, is a family favorite.
My boys can’t get enough of the fossil-themed splash pad and playground—it’s always a hit!
They also love exploring around the lagoon, where we often spot ducks, frogs, and fish. There is a boardwalk to walk on, and it’s such a peaceful area to wander around.
The wooded trails are another highlight. My boys always seem to find the perfect stick for their adventures!
We also enjoy strolling through the beautiful Rose Garden, just steps away from the Art Center.
11. Lauridsen Skate Park
Lauridsen Skate Park, the largest skate park in the nation, is truly a sight to see! 🛹
Whether you’re skating yourself or just watching, the energy here is unbeatable and so much fun to soak in.
We LOVE watching the skateboarders show off their incredible skills—it’s mesmerizing!
Pro Tip: Lauridsen Skate Park is conveniently located next to Rotary Riverwalk Park, a fun little spot with a rubber ground, a cool fish bobber for climbing, and a few swings the kids will love.
12. Des Moines Murals
Hunting for murals is a fun way to explore downtown Des Moines.
My kids love spotting vibrant street art and taking silly photos in front of their favorites.
13. Des Moines Downtown Farmers’ Market
Located on Court Avenue in Downtown Des Moines, the weekly Saturday morning Farmers’ Market is the place to be!
Running from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. from May through October, this impressive market will keep your family busy!
Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, the lively atmosphere alone is worth the trip.
Pro Tip: After visiting the market, take the opportunity to explore some of the scenic pedestrian bridges over the Des Moines River—they’re just a short walk away!

14. Iowa State Fairgrounds
Our family loves to visit the Iowa State Fairgrounds during the off-season or when the fair isn’t happening
While the Iowa State Fair itself is a must-do event that we always attend, exploring the fairgrounds during quieter times of the year is a fun and completely free experience!
The kids always enjoy the playground on-site, especially the wooden train car that’s perfect for climbing. They also love pretending to perform on the large stage next to the playground.
🎉 Exciting news: A new accessible, agriculture-themed playground is coming to the fairgrounds! This playground will be open year-round, making it another fantastic free addition to the Des Moines area.
There’s so much to see around the fairgrounds, from the rolling hills that are great for a little exercise to the open spaces where the kids can run freely.
Pro Tip: After your visit, stop by Dairy Zone on University Avenue for a delicious snack or lunch. It’s the perfect treat and conveniently located on the way back to the interstate!
15. High Trestle Trail Bridge
The High Trestle Trail Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Des Moines area—and for good reason!
Spanning half a mile across the Des Moines River, this breathtaking bridge features scenic overlooks and stunning views of the river valley.
You can walk or bike across the bridge, soaking in the beauty of its unique design and surroundings.
Pro Tip: To park close to the bridge, use this address: 2335 QF Lane, Madrid, Iowa. This parking lot is about 0.75 miles from the bridge, making it an easy walk or bike ride. 🚲
Crossing this impressive bridge and enjoying the panoramic views is an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
16. Big Creek State Park
Iowa is full of stunning state parks, and one of our family’s favorites near Des Moines is Big Creek State Park in Polk City, just 20 miles from the city.
The park is home to Big Creek Lake and boasts the largest beach in an Iowa state park—perfect for swimming and relaxing in the sand.
Our kids especially love the wooden playground near the beach, which is a big hit for climbing and playing.
Popular activities at Big Creek include swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, and picnicking. 🚲 🎣 🧺
Plus, there’s a concession area and boat rentals available near the lake, so you can make a full day of fun and adventure! 🚣
