As the holidays approach and winter knocks at our door, I can’t help but start thinking about where we might go next as a family. With four kids, winter vacations are our way to break up the cold months with some much-needed adventure and quality time together.
Whether we’re bundling up for snowy fun or escaping to sunshine, these family-friendly winter vacations in the U.S. always leave us with the best memories. ❄️ ☀️

Below are five doable & worth-it winter family vacation ideas we’ve loved!

#1 Phoenix: Outdoor Fun and Sunshine
Phoenix made our list of best family-friendly winter vacations because there’s so much to do outdoors—and so much of it is free or super budget-friendly. Plus, the winter weather is AMAZING. 🌵 ☀️
One of our family’s favorite Phoenix memories is the quick hike to Hole in the Rock.
It’s short and manageable for little legs, with a fun payoff at the top—the kids love peeking through the “window” or “hole”.
After the hike, we usually stroll the lagoon to look for birds and fish and then enjoy a simple picnic. .
💡Pro Tip: Do Hole in the Rock + lagoon picnic before lunch, then pick one paid attraction nearby to keep things simple—either the Phoenix Zoo or Desert Botanical Garden (they’re in the same area), so you’re not crisscrossing the city.
Beyond parks and trails, Phoenix is packed with kid-fun like McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, Phoenix Children’s Museum, and Goldfield Ghost Town.
And if you want a “wow” moment, a sunset hot-air balloon ride over the desert is unforgettable.

#2 San Diego: Sunshine and Family Adventures
San Diego is one of those places I keep bringing our boys back to.
We ALWAYS start on the USS Midway, and they’re instantly wide-eyed—climbing into cockpits, spotting jets, asking a million questions. Afterwards, we’ll wander into Seaport Village for a carousel ride and a treat, then sit by the water and just soak it all in. It’s easy, happy, and very us.
On another day, we’ll head to Balboa Park. The gardens and Spanish-style buildings feel magical, and we pick just one or two museums so no one melts down—then let the kids run on the lawns.

Alternatively, if your family wants animals over museums, you can swap this day for the San Diego Zoo (it’s right in Balboa Park) and then finish with a short garden stroll or playground time if energy allows.
La Jolla is another must-visit on our San Diego vacation. The kids love seeing the sea lions on the rocks, checking out the tidepools if the timing is right, and I can’t get enough of the big ocean views.
💡Pro Tip: Cluster your day so you’re not driving all over the place—USS Midway + Seaport Village; Balboa Park gardens + 1–2 museums or San Diego Zoo; La Jolla seals + an ice cream bribe for the ride home.

Why we keep coming back to San Diego
What I love most about San Diego is how effortless family adventures feel.
Whether we’re taking a scenic stroll, checking out an iconic attraction, or grabbing a bite at one of the many kid-friendly spots, there are so many simple ways to make memories together.
San Diego has become one of our go-to winter getaways for its mix of sunshine, outdoor time, and can’t-miss experiences with kids.
It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, soak in the moments, and still have plenty to keep everyone happy.
#3 Dallas, Texas: Big Adventures and Unique Family Experiences
Dallas has been on our family travel wish list for a while, and we finally made it happen!
It’s a great family-friendly winter destination because of its moderate winter weather and abundance of kid-friendly activities—and it did not disappoint!
We kicked things off at the Perot Museum, where the kids raced a cheetah (and a T-Rex!) and dove into hands-on exhibits I had to drag them away from. We had a blast here!
At the Dallas World Aquarium, the sloth stole the show (or it did for me anyways).
A big highlight of the trip was The Star in Frisco, where the kids had an absolute blast running on the 50-yard replica Dallas Cowboys turf at Tostitos Championship Plaza. They felt like professional athletes for the day!
We balanced the big indoor stops with playground breaks—Waterford Park’s rocket ship and Spirit Park’s treehouse are both tons of fun!
💡➡️ Pro Tip: To make the most of your trip, I recommend planning ahead and grouping activities by location to minimize driving time.

- Clear “zones” so you can cluster stops (which I would do because traffic can be an issue!)

- Day 1 (Downtown/Arts District): Perot Museum → Klyde Warren Park (Children’s Park + food trucks)
- Day 2 (Frisco/Allen): The Star turf time → Waterford Park (rocket ship themed in Allen) OR Spirit Park (treehouse play structures) → TopGolf
- Day 3 (Downtown/West End): Dallas World Aquarium → pick one nearby:
- Klyde Warren Park (playground + lawn time)
- Reunion Tower GeO-Deck (big views = quick wow)
Where to Stay in Dallas
Dallas is pretty spread out, so I recommend choosing a hotel based on which area you plan to explore most (Downtown, Frisco/Allen, or near family or activities).
We personally stayed at the Residence Inn Dallas Allen/Fairview since it was close to family, and the suite layout with a kitchen and free breakfast worked well for us.
Residence Inn is usually a reliable, family-friendly option for us as long as the reviews look good.

#4 Gatlinburg: A Family Favorite in Every Season
Gatlinburg has my heart. ❤️
It’s cozy and festive, with mountain views that make you pause.
We haven’t visited in winter yet—our trips have been spring and summer—but it’s high on our list after hearing how amazing it is from others.
Our kids love Anakeesta (I do too!)
From gliding up on the Chondola to wandering the Treetop Skywalk, and climbing at all of the different obstacles and play structures, Anakeesta is always on our to-do list when we visit Gatlinburg.

On a chilly day, Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is the perfect warm, backup plan.
If the weather cooperates, drive through Great Smoky Mountains National Park for a snowy hike or a scenic pull-off, then warm up with cocoa in town for the perfect winter day.

Winter adds extra sparkle: twinkling lights downtown, fun at The Island, and easy family meals that keep everyone in good spirits.
Ober Mountain’s tubing and ice activities are perfect for burning energy without a full ski day.

Where We Stay in Gatlinburg
Residence Inn Pigeon Forge
This has been a great home base for our family with free breakfast, spacious suites, a fun pool, and it’s just a quick two-minute drive over to The Island in Pigeon Forge for rides, food, and the fountain show.

We’ve also stayed in cabins and vacation rentals around Gatlinburg and loved those experiences too. Next time, I’d even consider something closer to downtown Gatlinburg or one of the Dollywood resorts for a different vibe.

During the wintertime, Gatlinburg brings the right mix of adventure, rest, and small-town charm, and that’s exactly why it’s a favorite year-round. I think your family will love it as much as ours does!
#5 Kansas City: Hands-On Museums & Easy Winter Days
Kansas City may not be as mild as some of our sunshine picks, but it’s a winter win for families because there’s so much to do indoors AND most of it clusters nicely so you’re not in the car all day.
Union Station is our hub: the kids climb, tinker, and explore at Science City, race over to the Model Train Gallery, and then we wander the historic halls for photos and a snack.
Union Station also hosts unique traveling exhibits throughout the year, and during the holidays Holiday Reflections turns the Grand Plaza into an immersive walk-through village with the sights and sounds of the season.
💡Pro Tip: Check dates and ticket types—traveling exhibits and Holiday Reflections often have timed entry or separate admission.
Over at Crown Center, we mix SEA LIFE and LEGOLAND Discovery Center for a high-energy day and, if timing works, pop outside for seasonal skating at the Ice Terrace.
If you’ve got older kids or basketball fans, swap in the College Basketball Experience at T-Mobile Center and grab lunch in the Power & Light District.
💡Pro Tip: Plan by area. Do Union Station one day and Crown Center the next, so you can park once and enjoy a couple of big wins without rushing. Save a weather-flex slot for either the National WWI Museum & Memorial (great views and exhibits) or more time at your kids’ favorite stop.

While our top five picks are full of family-friendly fun, there are so many other incredible destinations perfect for a winter getaway! Here are a couple of other spots we’ve visited as a family and absolutely recommend:
Las Vegas, Nevada – Las Vegas might surprise you as a family-friendly destination, but there’s so much for kids to enjoy! From the Bellagio Fountains (my favorite!) and the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay to taking day trips to the Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire State Park, it’s a fun spot to mix entertainment, exploration, relaxation.
Palm Springs, California – Palm Springs may be another surprising family-friendly destination but again, there is SO MUCH to do with kids! Plus, the weather in the winter is AMAZING! Also, Palm Springs has so many gorgeous resorts with fantastic pools that are perfect for families. We love Marriott’s Desert Springs Villas! Our favorite spots to visit include Living Desert Zoo and Gardens and the Palm Springs Air Museum. We especially loved the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which offers incredible views and a snowy winter experience at the top! Finally, take a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park!
