Do you dread the thought of figuring out what to pack for your entire family? Packing can feel overwhelming and just plain stressful!

Over time, as I traveled more with my family, I developed strategies that made packing easier and took away some of the mental load.

I’ve continued to refine these strategies, and while packing still isn’t my favorite task, it’s no longer something I dread!

I want you to experience stress-free packing too.

Keep reading to discover my top tips and strategies that will help you become a packing pro—or at least make it a whole lot more enjoyable!

Why Packing for Kids Feels So Overwhelming

Packing for kids can be incredibly overwhelming and mentally taxing—I know because I used to feel that way all the time. In fact, I dreaded it so much that I’d often procrastinate until the last minute. But all that did was leave me feeling rushed, stressed, and even more frustrated!

So why does packing feel so overwhelming?

For one, it’s tough to decide what to bring and how to fit everything into limited space.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably thought, “But what if we need this?” or “What if we go there and I wish I had packed that outfit?”

That kind of second-guessing can spiral into overpacking—or worse, forgetting something important.

The mental load is also huge when you’re packing for kids of different ages

Each age group has unique needs and essentials, and when you’re juggling a baby, a toddler, and maybe an elementary-aged child or older, it can feel impossible to keep track of everything.

Babies, for instance, need an entire arsenal of gear—diapers, bottles, pacifiers, and more. Then you still need to make sure your older kids have their clothes, entertainment, and comfort items.

On top of that, it’s easy to lose track of all those essentials once they’re packed.

How many times have you flipped through a suitcase, practically turning it upside down, searching for something you swear you packed? I’ve done it more times than I can count!

And let’s not forget the fear of forgetting something important—it’s at the root of most packing stress. No one wants to arrive at their destination only to realize they left behind a crucial item.

But here’s the good news: packing doesn’t have to feel this way. It can actually become an exciting part of your trip prep.

With a few simple tips and strategies, you can reduce the overwhelm, lighten the mental load, and approach packing with confidence—so you can focus on looking forward to your trip!

My Top 3 Tips for Stress-Free Packing

1. Use a Packing List

Having a packing list is the key to making your packing experience smoother and less stressful. 📝

It takes the guesswork out of trying to remember everything you need to bring.

To help you get started, I’ve created a handy packing list—and even a full bundle of packing lists tailored to different types of trips!

Using a packing list ensures you won’t forget any essentials.

All you need to do is go through the list, checking items off as you pack them

I recommend creating a separate packing list for each person in your family.

2. Start Early

One of the best ways to take the stress out of packing is to start early. Trust me—don’t wait until the last minute like I used to!  ⏰

Waiting only adds unnecessary pressure and leaves you scrambling.

Instead, use your packing lists to start gathering items at least a week before your trip. Begin placing things into your suitcase as you go, checking them off the list.

Starting early also gives you plenty of time to handle unexpected needs, like grabbing something from the store or ordering an item online.

Whether it’s a missing toiletry or a new size of clothing for a growing kid, starting early ensures you’re prepared.

3. Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes have been a total game-changer for my family’s travel experience! I love them so much that I’ll never pack without them again.

Packing cubes keep everything organized—not only while you’re packing but also throughout your trip.

No more digging through an entire suitcase to find one item. Instead, you can quickly grab the designated cube for that person or category.

Recently, I took organization to the next level by ordering different-colored packing cubes for each family member.

Now, I don’t even need to check labels—I can just spot the color and instantly know whose packing cube it is.

It’s such a simple tweak that has made packing (and unpacking) so much easier AND more enjoyable!

1. Keep Pre-Packed Travel Essentials

I keep a large travel bin in my storage room stocked with pre-packed essentials.

One of my favorites is our charging kit, which holds all the cords and batteries we need for phones, iPads, and watches.

This kit stays packed and ready to go, so there’s no last-minute scramble to gather chargers.

I also have a pre-packed toiletry bag and first aid kit.

Having these essentials ready to grab saves so much time and makes packing much less stressful!

2. Roll Clothes to Save Space

Rolling clothes is a game-changer when it comes to packing! I roll everyone’s clothing and place them in their packing cubes.

Not only does this save space—allowing more items to fit—but it also helps reduce wrinkles. A win-win!

3. Contain, Contain, Contain

Keep everything organized by giving each category of items its own spot.

No loose items rolling around!

Use pouches for makeup, a packing cube for small toys, another for medications, and so on.

Contain items not just in your suitcase but also in your carry-on and any other bags you bring.

Having designated places for everything makes it easier to pack, unpack, and quickly find what you need during the trip.

4. Delegate Packing Responsibilities to Older Kids

Involve your older kids by giving them their own packing lists.

Have them lay out everything they need on their bed based on the list.

Once they’re done, you can review their choices and pack everything into their cubes.

It’s a great way to lighten your load and teach them responsibility!

5. Pack a Just-In-Case Bag

Always prepare for the unexpected with a “just-in-case” bag.

If we’re driving, I keep everything in one bag. If we’re flying, I divide these items between the kids’ backpacks and my own.

Don’t forget these just-in-case essentials! 👇

✅ An extra set of clothes for each person

✅ Wet wipes

✅ A plastic bag for soiled items

✅ Stain remover pens

✅ A small first aid kit with band-aids and pain relievers
