Can you visit Mackinac Island for just one day?

Yes, a day trip to Mackinac Island is totally doable!

The Shepler’s Ferry and Arnold Transit Co. offer frequent service from both Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. You can catch the earliest ferry in the morning and return late afternoon or evening.

Expert Tip: Check the ferry schedule before departure to avoid missing the last boat back!

How do you spend the day on Mackinac Island?

To explore Mackinac Island in one day, rent a bicycle!

There are numerous places to rent bikes on the island, but we rented ours at Mission Point Resort, as it was the most convenient option for us.

If biking isn’t your thing, consider taking a carriage tour for a relaxing and scenic view of the island’s historic sights.

How Much Time Do You Need to See Mackinac Island?

A full day is ideal to explore Mackinac Island’s 8.2-mile perimeter by bike or carriage.

For a quick visit, you can enjoy downtown and the main attractions such as Fort Mackinac in about 3-4 hours.

If you want to bike around the island and enjoy a leisurely lunch, you’ll need closer to 6-8 hours.

Pro Tip: Arrive early to avoid crowds and ensure you have plenty of time to explore. Taking the first ferry of the day is your best bet!

Best Way to Tour Mackinac Island

While biking is the best way to get around, a carriage ride offers a relaxed, informative tour.

Walk around downtown to discover historic buildings, shops, and dining options.

It is just a 12-15 minute walk to Mission Point Resort where you can play some miniature golf while enjoying stunning views of the Straits of Mackinac.

Alternatively, you could walk to the Grand Hotel which will take you about 10 minutes. 

If you want to go to Fort Mackinac, it is just a 10 minute walk from the ferry docks.
