Planning a family trip to Omaha and wondering where to stay?

After traveling here more times than I can even count with my four boys, I can confidently say that the Old Market and Downtown Omaha area is the best place to stay with kids.

You will be close to family-friendly restaurants, walkable parks, ice cream shops, playgrounds, and top attractions like the Henry Doorly Zoo.

This guide breaks down the best areas to stay in Omaha with kids, our personal top hotel pick, and a handful of other great hotels that work well for families.

My goal is to help you choose a hotel that feels doable, comfortable, and truly worth it for your family.

Best Area to Stay in Omaha with Kids

The best area for families visiting Omaha is Downtown Omaha, especially the Old Market neighborhood, which sits along the southern edge of downtown near the riverfront.

The Old Market is a historic district filled with cobblestone streets, walkable restaurants, dessert shops, boutiques, and a cozy, charming atmosphere.

If you want to park once, walk to dinner, grab ice cream, visit Hollywood Candy, and explore with kids, this is the easiest and most family-friendly area.

The rest of Downtown Omaha surrounds the Old Market and includes beautiful parks and playgrounds like Gene Leahy Mall and Heartland of America Park, along with museums, event venues, and hotels. It is still very walkable and only a quick stroll or short drive to the Old Market.

Many families stay in the Old Market or nearby Downtown because these areas offer the best mix of convenience, walkability, and access to Omaha’s top attractions like the Henry Doorly Zoo and Lauritzen Gardens.

Here is what families especially love about staying in or near the Old Market area:

• Walkable meals and treats. The Old Spaghetti Factory, ice cream shops, and Hollywood Candy are all close by.
• Beautiful parks and green spaces. Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park, and The RiverFront are easy to reach on foot.
• Close to the Henry Doorly Zoo. Just a quick and simple drive.
• Family-friendly feel. The Old Market and Downtown area feels safe, relaxed, and easy to explore with kids.

Our Top Pick: Embassy Suites by Hilton Omaha Downtown Old Market

If you want a hotel that truly works for families, the Embassy Suites Old Market is the place we return to again and again.

It continues to be our go-to Omaha hotel because it makes traveling with kids feel easier and enjoyable from the moment we arrive.

Helpful tip. The main parking lot is across the street from the hotel, so I always unload our luggage in the small check-in lot before parking. It makes both arrival and departure much easier with kids.

Why We Love Embassy Suites Old Market

• Spacious two-room suites. With four boys, space matters. The separate living area gives everyone room to spread out and relax.

• Complimentary hot breakfast. A huge perk for families. No rushing out to find breakfast or spending more money to start your morning.

• Evening manager’s reception. Snacks and drinks in the evenings always feel like a treat after a full day exploring Omaha.

• Open atrium space. My boys love the fountains and big, airy feel of the lobby.

• Incredible location. We can walk to dinner, dessert, shops, playgrounds, and multiple parks without ever moving the car. That convenience alone makes this hotel a win for families.

• Easy access to Omaha’s riverfront parks. Heartland of America Park, the RiverFront, and Gene Leahy Mall are all just minutes away on foot.

For a family trip to Omaha, this is the hotel that checks every box. It is comfortable, convenient, and has the kind of amenities that make a trip with kids feel more doable.

This is a wonderful choice if you want extra space, a kitchen, or a place that feels comfortable for longer stays. Homewood Suites offers one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites, which work especially well for bigger families.

Why families like it:

Hyatt Place Omaha Downtown Old Market

Located right in the Old Market, Hyatt Place is a great choice for families who want a modern hotel at a lower price point.

The Hilton Omaha has an indoor pool, comfortable rooms, and a quick drive to both the Old Market and the zoo.

One thing to know. Standard rooms here sleep up to four, so it works best for smaller families or those booking multiple rooms.

Residence Inn Omaha Downtown/Old Market Area

Residence Inn offers studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom suites, free breakfast, and plenty of room to spread out.

It sits just north of the Old Market, making it an easy drive or a longer walk to restaurants, treats, and downtown parks.

Good to know. Some of the two-bedroom suites can sleep up to six, which is a big win for larger families. If you need that extra space, be sure to double-check the room type and maximum occupancy when you book.
