Do your kids love parks or playgrounds that have a theme? Mine sure do! They have been begging me to go to the Pirate Ship Park again aka Ironwood Park in Altoona, Iowa. If your kids have a passion for pirates or just love a themed park, I would recommend visiting Ironwood Park Altoona.

AMAZING THEMED PLAYGROUND
This is the perfect playground for pretending to play pirates. There are two main playsets. One looks like a pirate ship and the other looks like an island and features a couple of bridges and a cave. They also have a few other small things to play on to fit in with the theme including a dragon in the water, some large rocks, and another small island with palm trees.
My kids love to pretend they are pirates and shoot the cannons from the ship or walk the plank. Then they get to the island and chase each other around. Sometimes they have to fight the dragon. For kids with an imagination big or small, there is so much fun to be had at this park.
SAFE RUBBER GROUND TO PLAY ON
Now that my almost one year old is crawling everywhere and wants to be on the move, I purposely look for parks that have the rubber ground as opposed to wood chips or other types of ground. My other boys really love the rubber ground more too and it is much safer.
FUN SCAVENGER HUNT
On the pirate ship part of the playground they have a fun little pirate themed scavenger hunt to do. My kids also love searching for all of the items on the scavenger as do I! It is just another fun thing to at this park.
HUGE HILLS TO RUN OR ROLL DOWN
Another highlight of this park is its huge hills. Kids and adults love to run up and down them as well as see how fast they can roll down. The hills also give a great view of the playground and surrounding neighborhood.
OTHER AMENITIES
There are plenty of benches and picnic tables surrounding the playground. It also has a covered shelter with some picnic tables. One thing to note is that the only bathroom is a portable toilet. The park also has a drinking fountain.
I give Ironwood Park a 10 out of 10 for fun and uniqueness. Between the themed playground and the gigantic hills, the whole family is sure to have a blast here. Just make sure to use the restroom before you arrive if you are not too fond of a portable toilet.
