Planning where to stay in Dallas–Fort Worth with kids can feel overwhelming.
Dallas–Fort Worth is a huge metro area, and where you stay can make or break how your trip feels.
If you don’t think about location ahead of time, you could easily spend a big part of your day in the car. But if you plan this part well, your trip will feel so much more doable.
After visiting with my family and planning multiple trips to the area, I’ve learned that choosing the right location matters just as much as what you decide to do.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the best areas to stay, the types of hotels that work well for families, and how to choose what’s right for your trip.

How to Choose Where to Stay in Dallas-Fort Worth with Kids
When I plan a trip to Dallas–Fort Worth, I don’t start by picking a hotel. I start by deciding what we actually want to do.
On one trip, we focused on downtown Dallas and Frisco. We also wanted to visit the Fort Worth Stockyards, but ended up saving that for a separate trip since we were spending time with family.
That experience gave me a really good feel for just how spread out everything is.
On a different trip, we stayed right at the Stockyards, and it was a completely different experience. Being able to walk everywhere and not deal with driving made everything feel so much easier.
Here’s what I would recommend:
If you’re only planning to spend one day at the Stockyards, don’t choose your hotel based only on that.
Instead, look at everything you want to do and pick a location that makes the most sense overall.
But if the Stockyards is a big focus of your trip and you want that walkable experience, staying there is a really fun option.
The biggest goal is to group your activities by area so you’re not spending your whole trip in the car.
If you want help mapping this out, I put together a full Dallas–Fort Worth itinerary with kids that shows exactly how to group your days to minimize driving.

Best Areas to Stay in Dallas–Fort Worth with Kids
Downtown Dallas
Best for:
- Perot Museum
- Dallas World Aquarium
- Klyde Warren Park
Downtown Dallas is where you’ll find several of the main attractions, and it can be a good option if you want to stay close to those spots.
That said, for our family, we personally wouldn’t choose to stay downtown.
We spent time in the areas around the Perot Museum and Dallas World Aquarium and felt comfortable there, but as we drove through other parts of downtown, it just didn’t feel like the best fit for us with four kids.
We also found that:
- Hotel prices tend to be higher
- Hotel reviews weren’t as strong overall
- Dining options felt a little less convenient for quick, easy family meals
For us, staying in a nearby suburb and driving in for a day worked much better.

Fort Worth (Stockyards Area)
Best for:
- Fort Worth Stockyards
- A walkable, unique experience
- Easy access to everything in the Stockyards
If visiting the Fort Worth Stockyards is a big part of your trip, staying in this area is a really fun option.
We stayed right near Stockyards Station at the Hyatt Place Fort Worth Stockyards, and it worked so well for our family.
Being able to walk out of the hotel and go straight into the Stockyards without worrying about parking or traffic made everything feel so much easier.
It also gave us the flexibility to take breaks during the day and then head back out again, which makes a big difference with kids.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Stockyards can get pretty busy, especially on weekends.
But staying right there helps with that because you’re not dealing with parking or trying to navigate crowds all at once. You can come and go more easily.
If I were planning a trip focused on the Stockyards, this is where I would stay again.
That said, if the Stockyards is just one stop during your trip, I wouldn’t necessarily choose to stay here for your entire visit.
It’s a bit farther from Dallas, so it makes more sense if you plan to spend a good amount of time in Fort Worth or want that specific experience.
If the Stockyards are on your list, you can read my full Fort Worth Stockyards with kids guide here.

Frisco (and North Dallas Suburbs)
Best for:
- The Star in Frisco
- Easy access to parks and family-friendly areas
- Newer hotels and convenient suburban layout
Frisco and the surrounding North Dallas suburbs are a really easy place to stay with kids.
We’ve spent time in this area, and it felt like a place we would absolutely consider staying on a future trip.
If your trip includes The Star or other attractions nearby, staying here would make a lot of sense.
If I were booking a stay in Frisco, there are a few hotels I would personally look at first based on reviews and what works for our family:
- Drury Inn & Suites
- Homewood Suites
- Home2 Suites
These are all located near each other and check a lot of boxes for us. They offer space for a family of six, have strong reviews, and include complimentary breakfast, which always makes mornings easier.

Grapevine (and Nearby Areas)
Best for:
- Grapevine Mills (LEGOLAND Discovery Center, SEA LIFE Aquarium, Peppa Pig World of Play)
- Meow Wolf
- A central location between Dallas and Fort Worth
Grapevine is an area that’s high on my list for a future trip.
We haven’t made it here yet, but it stands out because there are so many family-friendly attractions in one place.
Grapevine Mills alone has a lot to do with kids, and I also love the idea of spending time in Historic Downtown Grapevine.
If you’re planning to visit multiple attractions in this area, staying nearby would make things a lot easier.
If I were booking a hotel here, the one I would look at first is Embassy Suites Grapevine DFW Airport North.
It offers suite-style rooms, complimentary breakfast, and has strong reviews, which are all things I personally look for when choosing a hotel for our family.
Where We Stayed (and Why)
We personally stayed at the Residence Inn Dallas Allen/Fairview because it was close to family.
The suite layout, kitchen, and free breakfast worked really well for our family of six.
When we visited Fort Worth on a separate trip, we stayed at the Hyatt Place Fort Worth Stockyards, and this was such a convenient location.
Being able to walk to the Stockyards made a huge difference, especially with kids.

- A pool for downtime
- Good reviews (this is non-negotiable for us)
