It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s SUPERMAN!

On our recent road trip to Chattanooga from Des Moines, Iowa, we made a stop in Metropolis, Illinois.

Let me tell you…this small town has so much to offer its visitors. There are so many things to do in Metropolis that you could easily spend close to a day enjoying this lovely town.

Whether you are simply passing through, or you want to plan a day trip, find out all the best things to do in Metropolis, Illinois.

Visit the Superman Statue

The most prominent attraction in Metropolis is the Superman Statue. It is definitely a must see and worth the stop even if it is just to get a picture with this noteworthy statue.

This humongous statue stands 15 ft tall and is a sight to see!

It is located in what is known as Superman Square on Market Street. It cannot be missed!

Browse the Super Museum and Gift Shop

Right near the statue you will see the Super Museum and Gift Shop.

I highly suggest browsing through the gift shop. There is a ton of Superman memorabilia and souvenirs.

Unless you are a Superman aficionado, I would recommend skipping the museum

It is a little bit pricey for what it is and not much different from what you see in the gift shop. My kids went through it in about 10 minutes and actually enjoyed the gift shop more.

Wander around downtown Metropolis

Downtown Metropolis is quaint with some cool murals, statues, shops, and restaurants.

There is a cute coffee shop about a block down from the the Super Museum and Gift Shop called Sissy’s – A Sweet Shoppe. They also serve lunch.

Note: Sissy’s is NOT open on Sundays.

Also, make sure to take a picture with the Lois Lane statue. It is on Eighth Street just down Market Street from the Superman Statue.

See Fort Massac State Park

Fort Massac State Park is a gorgeous park located along the Ohio River.

There are great trails to walk on and amazing views of the river.

Additionally, there is a visitor’s center and historic site. Make sure to double check the hours on its website

The park also has three playgrounds plus some great places for a picnic.

Fort Massac State Park is the perfect place to get some exercise while enjoying the outdoors in addition to getting an intriguing history lesson!

Check out the Hope Light Lighthouse

The Metropolis Hope Light Lighthouse is located in Dorothy Miller Park along the riverfront.

There is a small parking lot and a couple of benches that are perfect for taking a moment to enjoy the view of the lighthouse and river.

Take your picture with Kryptonite

How often can you say that you saw and took a picture with some kryptonite? On your visit to Metropolis, you can say you did just that!

The kryptonite meteorite is located on the corner of Third and Ferry Streets.

It is a very easy walk from Superman Square.

There are certainly so many intriguing and unique things to do in Metropolis, Illinois.

Next time you are traveling through the area, make sure to take an hour or so to stop and experience some of these amazing attractions OR plan a day trip here!
